National Grilled Cheese Day

I am very excited about this, my first blog post because it is about my very favorite food:  The Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

I thought that if I was going to make grilled cheese my first blog topic, I should know a little history of my beloved sandwich.  Grilled cheese sandwiches (in various forms) have existed throughout history.  This shouldn’t come a surprise because any combination of bread, cheese, and meat is almost always a winner.  The classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich as we know it today began in the 1920s.  It was at this time that sliced bread and American cheese first hit supermarkets.  Originally, the sandwich was open-faced.  It wasn’t until the 1960s that the delicious, melted cheese was “sandwiched” between two slices of bread  (foodtimeline.org).

Currently, the grilled cheese is featured on the menus of every diner, chain restaurant, and kid’s menu.  It’s a simple, cheap sandwich that is golden and crispy on the outside and warm and melty on the inside.

To honor National Grilled Cheese Day, Greg Hauenstein and I decided to make this delicious sandwich, with our own additions.

Happy National Grilled Cheese Day to All!
